Williams sisters, Bonds on rise

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Sept. 10
Each week I will post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

Richard Williams has done things, as Frank Sinatra would say, "my way!" A lot of people criticized him when he said his daughters, Venus and Serena Williams, would be the top players in tennis.

Saturday night at the U.S. Open proved his point. His daughters didn't come up through the junior ranks, like most pros on the tour circuit do. Yet there they were in the finals of the year's final Grand Slam. Richard Williams can be proud of his daughters.

Barry Bonds continues to make headlines, hitting home runs No. 61, 62 and 63 on Sunday. He has hit more home runs in a season than any other left-handed batter. To me, he is the NL MVP this season, though I know a lot of people would say Sammy Sosa or even Luis Gonzalez.

Yes, Bonds has Rich Aurilia enjoying a big season, but Jeff Kent hasn't posted the kind of stats he did a year ago. Bonds is carrying that team. I feel he is the best left fielder to ever play the game, incorporating all the tools. He can hit, field, run, hit for power -- he can flat-out do it all.

Then there is Fresno State's football team. Pat Hill's squad has scored big wins over Colorado, Oregon State and Wisconsin. Winning in Madison, coming back from a 20-10 deficit, is impressive. David Carr has developed into a big-time QB. People are talking about Miami's Ken Dorsey and Nebraska's Eric Crouch; now America has to look at Mr. Carr, baby!

The Cubs have done this before, teasing people all season before failing to win the big game. Chicago now has lost five straight. Sammy Sosa can't do it all alone.

The Redskins were embarrassed by the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Pity poor Marty Schottenheimer in his debut as Redskins' coach. You know former Redskins coach Norv Turner, now a member of the Chargers' coaching staff, had to be happy with the 30-3 win.

Teddy Dupay comes from a good family in Fort Myers, Fla. Unfortunately, he made mistakes during his college career at Florida. Now he has to learn from those mistakes as his playing days with the Gators are over.
