Sept. 4
Each week I will post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.
Stock up: Fresno State, Mussina, Bud Smith
Here's a salute to Fresno State's football program. Pat Hill has done a great job, and his team plays a very tough schedule. The Bulldogs opened with a big win at Colorado, then followed with a big-time victory over Oregon State, which was picked No. 1 by Sports Illustrated. Fresno State has another test this week, facing Wisconsin.
Mike Mussina pitched a real gem on Sunday night, taking a perfect game into the ninth. Carl Everett broke it up with two outs. Mussina is peaking at the right time. I know a lot of people are talking about the Mariners and Athletics, but when all is said and done, give me Clemens, Mussina, Pettitte and company. I feel the Yankees will win their fourth straight championship.
Cardinals rookie pitcher Bud Smith was brilliant in throwing a no-hitter against the Padres Monday night.
Stock down: Red Sox, Almonte's father, Al Martin
They are not the Red Sox -- now, they are the dead Sox! Boston has fallen apart, 9½ games behind the Yankees.
Danny Almonte's father should be ashamed of himself. That whole story was a disgrace. It's unbelievable that the young man didn't even attend school here. It is very sad.
Then there is Mariners outfielder Al Martin. He claimed he played college football at USC, but the truth came out that he did not.
