Tracy quietly guiding Dodgers

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Aug. 6
Each week I will post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

Half of the people in Los Angeles don't even know who the Dodgers' manager is. It's Jim Tracy from Sarasota, Fla., baby, and he is doing a super job.

Think about what has happened to Tracy's starting rotation -- Darren Dreifort, Andy Ashby and Kevin Brown are all injured, yet the Dodgers are right there in the wild NL West race with the Diamondbacks and Giants. A big-time stock up to Tracy.

Also stock up to the Toronto Raptors for acquiring Hakeem Olajuwon. He provides experience in the pivot and should contribute a solid 20-25 minutes a game. The Raptors also re-signed Vince Carter to a long-term deal. Give credit to Glen Grunwald and the Raptors organization for building a team going in the right direction.

What about the Oakland A's? Art Howe's team is making an unbelievable run at the wild card when many people had the team dead and buried early in the season. Stock up to the big three starters as Mark Mulder, Tim Hudson and Barry Zito have been pitching very, very well.

I really don't like whining. Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes, whom I loved as a player with the Dodgers, was upset recently when Rickey Henderson stole a base with the Padres holding a seven-run lead. Guess what? Lopes should be more upset about the fact his team is 15 games below .500 despite a lineup that includes Richie Sexson, Jeromy Burnitz and Geoff Jenkins (though Jenkins is currently on the DL). The Brewers haven't played up to their potential.

Henderson may have had the right idea, considering what happened to the Mariners and Indians on Sunday night. Lou Piniella's team was up 14-2 in the seventh inning, and the Tribe came all the way back and won, 15-14!

Also stock down to Jennifer Capriati. I know she has had a big year, winning the Australian and French Open championships. She was whining and crying after last week's quarterfinal loss to Monica Seles at the Acura Classic.

Capriati complained that Seles' grunting got the best of her. When you play Seles, you have to expect some grunting, so I don't want to hear excuses. If Capriati had won the match, do you think she would have complained?
