Each week I will post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.
Stock up: Cardinals, Diamondbacks
The St. Louis Cardinals have been on fire, winning 11 in a row. Give Tony La Russa a lot of credit for getting this team in contention in the NL Central and the wild-card race. La Russa has done a great job considering the injuries that have hurt the team. J.D. Drew missed a lot of time, as did Mark McGwire.
Matt Morris has been sensational, going 16-7. He attended Seton Hall, my alma mater. Seton Hall has produced the likes of Mo Vaughn, Craig Biggio and John Valentin over the years.
Also, stock up to the Diamondbacks and Bob Brenly. They have the best 1-2 pitching combination in Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson. Luis Gonzalez has been super, scintillating and sensational -- and he would get my vote for NL MVP in a tight race over Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa.
Drew Brees, the San Diego Chargers rookie, had a super game over the weekend. I really believe the former Purdue Boilermaker will develop into an outstanding player as he plays and learns behind Doug Flutie. He has a great feel for the game and will be different than the other San Diego early round QB of a few years ago, Ryan Leaf.
Stock down: Everett, Red Sox
I am fed up with the way Carl Everett of the Red Sox has been acting. I saw the incident last week when he was upset with Jamie Moyer of the Mariners. Imagine if a dad brings his son to a game and they see that?
That's some advertisement for Major League Baseball. It was a total disgrace, but not a shock given Everett's track record. If Everett played years ago and acted that way, a guy like Bob Gibson would have drilled him.
Speaking of the Red Sox, they had lost eight of 11 games, so it was time to blame the manager. Jimy Williams was fired despite doing a great job. Think about the injuries to Pedro Martinez, Nomar Garciaparra and Everett. This is a team going nowhere. The Red Sox will not make the playoffs.
Another team whose stock is going down: the Minnesota Twins. They overachieved early but have folded in the second half of the season. Brad Radke's injury hurt, and Joe Mays has not pitched well in the second half after an All-Star first half.
Also down: the Dallas Cowboys. Quincy Carter is going to struggle and this team will be lucky to win four or five games.
