Sosa joins elite HR club

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Aug. 27
Each week I will post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

Sammy Sosa became the third player in major-league history to hit 50 home runs in four seasons, joining Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire. More impressively, Sosa has been carrying the Cubs in the pennant race.

Yes, guys Like Barry Bonds and Luis Gonzalez have had super seasons, but they have better supporting casts than Sosa does. Sammy has been on fire, baby! He has more than double the RBI of the Cubs' second-place hitter in that category.

Tony Banks was signed by the Redskins after being cut by the Cowboys. I can't figure out what Dallas is doing anyway. Banks led the 'Skins on three scoring drives and played well in their first preseason win, edging the Browns. Jeff George is the starter, but Banks showed something in getting the W.

Apopka, Fla. was special in winning the U.S. Little League championship. The team won despite an injury to Beau French, who is a big-time player, a solid pitcher and hitter. Speaking of the Little League World Series, what about Danny Almonte of the Bronx, going 3-0 and striking out 45 batters in just 18 innings.

The Cleveland Indians need John Rocker to come through in relief. He has had his struggles, giving up the closer role to Bob Wickman. Rocker threw a ball away in a loss to Seattle on Saturday. If the Tribe is going to make some noise in the postseason, Rocker will have to turn it around.

Also, stock down to Jeff Lewis of the Carolina Panthers. It looked like Lewis would enter the season as the team's starting quarterback since Steve Beuerlein went to Denver. Now, Chris Weinke may end up as the starter. Lewis threw three interceptions and had just 19 passing yards in the last preseason game, against the Ravens.
