Tennis Fan Guide Olympic competition dates: Sept. 19-28 Venue: Tennis Centre, Sydney Olympic Park The outlook Olympic participation by top tennis stars tends to be spotty. Missing from Sydney will be Pete Sampras, Mary Pierce, Martina Hingis and Nathalie Tauziat, all in the top 10. Davis Cup captain John McEnroe declined an invitation to coach the U.S. men. With a strong American team, this year's tennis could be the best yet since the sport returned to full-medal status in 1988. Wimbledon champion Venus Williams has a chance at two gold medals because she's playing doubles with sister Serena and singles. Andre Agassi and Lindsay Davenport will try to duplicate their gold-medal performances from Atlanta. The finer points The courts: The Olympic tournaments will be played on a new hardcourt built out of the same type of materials as those used at the Australian Open. Format: All matches except the finals are played to best of three sets. The exception are the men's singles and doubles finals that are best-of-five. One loss and the athlete is out of the tournament. The semifinals losers play for the bronze medal. | |
