Golf before hitting the road

By Scott Pellerin
Special to ESPN.com

Throughout Minnesota's inaugural training camp, Scott Pellerin will give ESPN.com users an up-close look at the Wild. Pellerin, a seven-year NHL veteran who might be the team's first captain, checks in with Diary No. 9 -- a golf outing and preparing for the team's first road trip.

If you want to ask Pellerin a question or send him a comment, click here. When Pellerin finds some time between skating, naps and his family he'll try to answer a few of the best ones.

Saturday was a day off, and we had a team lunch and golf outing. We played a new course in the area and had a great time. There are a lot of good golfers on this team -- Jeff Neilsen, Stacy Roest, Curtis Leschyshyn and Aaron Gavey. Jamie McLennan, who isn't a golfer, came along for the day to be with the guys and set a record for most cell phone calls during a round of golf. Jeff Odgers also came to the course to meet the guys for lunch, styling on his Harley Davidson. It was beautiful day for a ride both on Harleys and golf carts.

Sunday's practice was solid. We did some tough one-on-one drills and focused a lot on our defensemen. Coach Lemaire is good at getting the most out of practices with strategic drills and an overall purpose or lesson in each one. I find that even though we are all trying to earn one of the 23 spots on the team, the guys seem to really enjoy the practices, work hard and still have fun. The coaches and management will have to make a lot of tough decision to get it down to that number.

They came out with the list of players who will be traveling to Portland, Ore. to play in the first preseason game. The day after that, we play Anaheim in Anaheim. I am excited to be going on the trip and to be able to play in the first game. The only thing is since we still have 36 guys, we have to leave some behind. Those guys not traveling will be apart from the team for four days and practicing on their own.

Time to pack up a get ready for my first road trip of the season. We have practice here Monday morning and leave right after for the airport.
