His hands: Great hands. Is quick to put his glove on it so he can put the puck back down and fire it back up ice to keep the play alive and help the transition. His feet: He has a tendency to "lean" on short-side shots. When he is square to the shooter, his patience is the key to quick feet. His stick: The best there is. Period. Teams prepare to avoid dumping the puck in on him. Scary. He can also pokecheck extremely well. His technique: Not a big fan of "percentages," he has a variety of options. He can two-pad slide, butterfly, lean or drag a leg.Y ou name it and he will do it during a game.
Arturs Irbe, Carolina
His hands: He has quick hands, keeps them in front of his body to cushion shots. Good hand/eye coordination. His feet: Wears the oldest pads in the NHL.They are to his liking. Can butterfly to both posts and covers more net than you think for a smaller guy. His stick: Not going to the Hall of Fame as a puckhandler, but like most Europeans, has a quick stick in tight for pokechecks. His technique: Makes himself as large as possible. Stays on his feet as long as he can, reads the shot, then reacts. Darren Pang, a former goaltender with the Chicago Blackhawks, is a hockey analyst for ESPN.
