New York Islanders: The Islanders re-signed veteran defenseman Kenny Jonsson to a two-year contract Thursday. Financial terms were not released. Jonsson, a restricted free agent, had eight goals and 18 assists in 71 games last season, his eighth with the Islanders. A first-round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1993, Jonsson was traded to the Islanders in 1996. He has 58 goals and 180 assists in 607 games in 10 NHL seasons. Jonsson's best season came in 1997-98, when he had 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points in 81 games. Phoenix Coyotes: Defenseman Cale Hulse signed a multiyear deal with the Coyotes on Thursday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Hulse had two goals and six assists in 80 games with the Nashville Predators last season, leading the team with 121 penalty minutes.
The eight-year veteran has also played with New Jersey and Calgary. He has 71 career points.
He was picked by the New Jersey Devils in the 1992 draft. Nashville Predators: The Predators re-signed forward Scott Hartnell on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not announced. The 21-year-old Hartnell led the Predators in shots last season with 221, and ranked second with 101 penalty minutes in 82 games. He finished with 12 goals and 22 assists. Hartnell, the Predators' first selection, sixth overall, in the 2000 entry draft, has 28 goals and 63 assists in 232 games in three seasons with Nashville. Carolina Hurricanes: The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Bruno St. Jacques to a one-year contract worth $375,000 on Thursday. St. Jacques showed promise at the end of last season after being acquired Feb. 7 from Philadelphia. He had two goals and five assists in 18 games with the Hurricanes. The 22-year-old St. Jacques could move into the lineup if Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford can't sign Danny Markov, who was acquired in a draft-day trade from Phoenix. Markov, a restricted free agent, is threatening to play in Russia if he doesn't get a contract he likes from the Hurricanes. St. Jacques played 20 or more minutes in seven of his 18 games with Carolina. Defense was one of the Hurricanes' weakness last season. Carolina allowed 240 goals, third-worst in the Eastern Conference. The team signed veteran free agent Glen Wesley, who played with the club last year before being traded to Toronto, to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million Tuesday. Boston Bruins: The team signed goaltender Hannu Toivonen to a three-year deal Thursday.
Toivonen, the Bruins' top draft pick in 2002, played in the Finish Elite League last year and probably will play with Providence of the AHL next season.
The 6-foot-2, 191-pound native of Kalvola, Finland, went 16-2-4 for HPK Hameenllnna last season with a 2.26 goals-against average.
The Bruins also signed center Sergei Sinojev to a two-year contract. |
