Tuesday, September 19 Wilson, Paul Hamm left for U.S. gymnasts
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia -- American Stephen McCain withdrew from
Wednesday's individual all-around competition at the Olympics
because of a badly sprained ankle.
He will be replaced by Alejandro Barrenechea of Spain.
McCain sprained his right ankle during a pre-Olympic training
camp 2½ weeks ago, and U.S. coach Peter Kormann wasn't sure he'd be
able to compete until three days before the team competition began.
McCain did compete, but reinjured the ankle while vaulting
during Monday's team finals. He landed short and jammed his ankle
into the mat, grimacing in pain as he tried to stand.
Though he sat on the mat for several minutes, he told Kormann he
was OK and continued with the competition.
The United States finished fifth in the team finals.
Five-time national champion Blaine Wilson and Paul Hamm are the
other Americans in the all-around.
