Gymnastics Fan Guide Just three years after the Magnificent Seven won the United States' first women's Olympic all-around title, the Americans finished last in the medals round at the world championships. Two of the five competing members of the Atlanta medalists, Dominique Moceanu and Jaycie Phelps, were forced to withdraw from the trials because of injuries. ARTISTIC Olympic competition dates: Sept. 14-26 Venues: Sydney SuperDome, Sydney Olympic Park Men are scored in seven individual events: floor, vault, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar and all-around. Women are judged in five: floor, vault, uneven bars, balance beam and all-around. In awarding scores, judges take into consideration the degree of difficulty of a gymnast's program, along with aesthetic appeal. Points are deducted for such faults as poor execution, lack of control, falling, missing requirements or exceeding the time limit. The individual all-around champions are determined by totaling scores on all the apparatuses. RHYTHMIC Olympic competition dates: Sept. 26-Oct. 1 Venues: Pavilion 2, Sydney Olympic Park While artistic gymnastics is performed on an apparatus, rhythmic gymnastics is performed only by women with props, such as 20-foot ribbons, hoops and ropes. The props are rolled along the ground, jumped through and wound around the body, with emphasis on grace, beauty and coordination of movement between prop and athlete. The event is performed to music. In team competition, five athletes perform together. TRAMPOLINE Olympic competition dates: Sept. 22-23 Venues: Sydney SuperDome, Sydney Olympic Park Olympic debut: Trampoline gymnastics debuts in the male and female individual events with 12 qualifiers in each.
