Equestrian Fan Guide The outlook Although the event was a part of the 1956 Melbourne, Australia Games, the equestrian competition took place in Stockholm, Sweden, as the horses did not meet quarantine laws. Germany won team and individual dressage events at the past four Olympics as well as the team and individual jumping competitions four years ago at Atlanta. European and U.S. riders have dominated the three-day event, but Australia and New Zealand have come out on top recently. DRESSAGE Olympic competition dates: Sept. 23-Oct. 1 Venue: Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park Horse and rider perform in silence, executing the same movements at different gaits to display control, pace, fluidity and rider's posture. SHOW JUMPING Olympic competition dates: Sept. 23-Oct. 1 Venue: Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park Horse and rider set out to tackle a course of 15-20 obstacles at breakneck speed. Courses are designed with colorful jumps intended to blend in with the background or to draw the horses' attention from the top rail, which is set at more than five feet high. THREE-DAY EVENT Olympic competition dates: Sept. 16-22 Venue: Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park This event involves dressage, speed/endurance test and stadium show jumping.
