COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Jamie Huscroft scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period and Olaf Kolzig stopped 19 shots as the Washington Capitals topped the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-1, in exhibition play.

A well-traveled defenseman who has not scored a regular-season goal since 1996, Huscroft got the puck off a faceoff above the right circle and ripped a one-time slap shot past rookie Marc Lamothe's glove with 9:03 to go in the second period.

Steve Konowalchuk added a power-play goal in the final minute of the period and James Black also scored for the Capitals, who improved to 4-1 in the preseason.

After Black staked Washington to a 1-0 lead in the opening minute against his former team, Eric Daze tied it at 2:56 of the first period with a power-play goal.

Lamothe made 30 saves for Chicago, which rested regulars Tony Amonte, Doug Gilmour and Alexei Zhamnov. Peter Bondra, Adam Oates and Sergei Gonchar were among the missing for the Caps.
