ESPN.com news services

San Jose Sharks: The team re-signed center Patrick Marleau to a two-year contract on Friday and signed two others.

Marleau, 23, signed a deal "in the neighborhood of $2.4 million per year," according to the team's Web site. Marleau posted career highs in goals (28), assists (29) and points (57) in 82 games last season.

The Sharks also signed 19-year-old center Marcel Goc and re-signed defenseman Rob Davison, 23, who had four points and 82 penalty minutes in 42 games with AHL Cleveland last season.

"We're building some momentum here and have advanced discussions with other players also," said general manager Doug Wilson, who hopes to have everyone signed by training camp. "To me, training camp has already started. ... My ultimate goal is to have this not be a distraction, to get everybody in camp and have these contracts addressed way in advance."

Marleau has scored at least 20 goals the past three seasons. He helped Canada to a gold medal at this summer's World Championships in Finland.

Montreal Canadiens: The team signed Russian forward Alexander Perezhogin to a three-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Perezhogin, 19, was selected 25th overall in the 2001 draft. In 48 games with Omsk of the Russian league last season, he had 15 goals and six assists.

He also helped Russia win the gold medal at the world junior championships.

Perezhogin was second in team scoring with nine points in six games at the world juniors, including two assists in the gold medal game against Canada.

Florida Panthers: Right wing Max Birbraer signed a one-year contract. Birbraer, 22, played in 57 games with Albany of the AHL last season, getting six goals and six assists and accruing 42 penalty minutes.

Originally drafted by New Jersey in the third round in 2000, Birbraer spent the last three seasons in Albany, recording 19 goals, 19 assists and 88 penalty minutes.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Atlanta Thrashers: The team signed 1999 draft pick Tommi Santala. The Finnish center will report to training camp in September.

Santala was taken in the ninth round with the 245th overall pick.

"Tommi has taken some tremendous strides over the last few seasons and really developed into one of our top prospects," Atlanta general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. "We look forward to having him make the transition to the professional level in North America and competing for a spot on the team."

Santala, 24, finished third in the Finnish Elite League last season with a career-high 51 points (13 goals, 38 assists) in 50 games with HPK Hameenlinna. He also was eighth in the league with 92 penalty minutes.
