Each week I post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.
Stock Up: Arizona, Nets, Packers
It was shock city as Arizona walked away with the gold trophy at the IKON Classic. The Wildcats upset a pair of top-five teams in Maryland and Florida, thanks to tourney MVP Jason Gardner. The point guard had to be glad he pulled his name out of the NBA draft, staying in school. He scored 46 points in the two games and showed leadership for Lute Olson's young squad. Arizona won with five freshmen logging major minutes.
Maryland gets a stock-up salute -- but not for basketball. The football team is one win away from securing a BCS bowl bid, and Ralph Friedgen has done an amazing job. He gets my vote for Coach of the Year. The Terps were impressive in beating Clemson Saturday night.
The New Jersey Nets are 5-1, and Byron Scott has done a great job. Rod Thorn did a great job acquiring Jason Kidd, who is a great all-around player. Todd MacCulloch has been a plus in the middle, and rookie Richard Jefferson has helped out.
Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers moved into a tie in the NFC Central with a big win at Chicago, ending the Bears' miracle streak of comeback wins. Favre just finds ways to get the job done, and he has to be an MVP candidate for the first half of the season.
Stock Down: Bulls, Florida State, Northwestern
The Chicago Bulls ... I feel for Tim Floyd, who works hard and really belongs on the collegiate sidelines. Can you explain how this franchise trades a superstar in Elton Brand, and it's not like he's 30, for Tyson Chandler? This is a roster that may have trouble beating Duke. Charles Oakley needs to be on a winner, and he's going to have problems in this environment as the team keeps on losing. The veteran was already fined $50,000 for criticizing the team. Eddy Curry is not ready, either. It's going to be a long season in the Windy City, baby!
Florida State's football team has had a rough season. The Seminoles lost homecoming for the first time under Bobby Bowden, losing to N.C. State and former FSU assistant Chuck Amato. It was also Florida State's first ACC home loss.
The Shame on You award should go to UCLA's DeShaun Foster and Boston College's William Green. Both star running backs were suspended last weekend, and both of their teams could have won if they played. The Bruins lost 21-20 to Oregon, while the Eagles battled No. 1 Miami to the wire.
Northwestern football, once one of the Big Ten favorites, has been giving up lots of points lately. First Indiana scored 56 on the Wildcats last week, then Iowa put up 59 at Northwestern this past weekend.
