Bonds, Duke hit big-time HRs

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Oct. 8
Each week I post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

What can you say about Barry Bonds? He finished the season with 73 home runs, shattering Mark McGwire's record. And Bonds did it despite the fact he didn't see good pitches down the stretch. It is a truly remarkable feat, both the power display and the way he stayed in a zone.

Duke's recruiting class is considered one of the best ever assembled. Guru Bob Gibbons told me it was the best he has seen. The addition of Shavlik Randolph from Raleigh was the capper.

Staying in the ACC, what about the Terps? I'm not talking about Gary Williams' basketball team, which will be ranked No. 2 in my magazine. Maryland's football team is 5-0 for the first time since 1978. Ralph Friedgen has done a great job and the Terps have the nation's leading rusher in Bruce Perry, averaging over 160 yards a game. Maryland has a test against Georgia Tech on Thursday on ESPN.

Rex Grossman has emerged as the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy. The Gators QB picked apart LSU in Baton Rouge -- not an easy feat. He has thrown for 300-plus yards every game this season in leading Steve Spurrier's squad.

Martina Hingis is not playing like the world's No. 1. She hasn't won a tournament since February, and she lost 6-2, 6-2 in 39 minutes to Elena Dementieva in a match at the Kremlin Cup last week.

What's up with Barry Alvarez? His Wisconsin team was blown out by Indiana. The Badgers gave up 63 points to a Hoosiers team that entered the contest 0-3 and didn't total 63 points in those first three losses!

I really love and respect Greg Maddux, but he enters the playoffs struggling big-time. He is 0-4 in his last seven starts. It is the first time he has gone winless in seven straight starts since 1991.
