Braves' staff coming up clutch

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Oct. 15
Each week I post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

It's playoff time, so it shouldn't be a surprise that veteran pitchers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz have stepped up big-time for the Braves. Maddux and Glavine were super in their starts against the Astros. Smoltz has been a key since moving to the bullpen. Now they get to face Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson and the Diamondbacks in the NLCS.

What a great weekend for college football! The star of the weekend was UCLA running back DeShaun Foster, who gained 301 yards and scored four touchdowns against a top-10 opponent, Washington. How about Foster moving up the list of Heisman candidates?

Brett Favre is having a super season as the Packers have emerged as a contender in the NFC. Favre threw for more than 300 yards against the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens. He has to be a top candidate for NFL MVP so far this season.

Even though they won the NL Central, the Astros really struggled at the end of the regular season and then fell apart against the Braves in the NL Division Series. It's hard to believe with that much talent in the lineup -- Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Moises Alou, Lance Berkman and company.

Florida State's football team was handled by Miami in Tallahassee. The Seminoles have already lost twice this season and the schedule still has the likes of Maryland, Clemson and Florida ahead. This could be a long season for Bobby Bowden.
