Železný goes for third gold despite injury

PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Czech Jan Železný is aiming for his third gold medal in javelin at the Sydney Olympics despite a nagging rib injury that means he will probably not throw again before the Games.

Jan Zelezny
Jan Železný has won two consecutive golds in the javelin.

World record-holder Železný, who took gold in Atlanta and Barcelona, told reporters on Thursday before leaving for Brisbane that he suffered the injury during training.

"At the last (examination), doctors could not believe I am throwing 90 meters while I could successfully apply for a pension as an invalid," said the 34-year-old who will compete in Sydney even if the pain does not go away.

Železný has won the world championship twice and lost out on gold in his first Olympic Games in Seoul by just 16 centimeters.

He said there was no clear-cut favorite in the event, which starts on Sept. 23, and his main rival will be his own physical condition.

"The most important is to believe in one's self and not to make mistakes," Železný said.

Win or lose, Železný said he would continue his career after the Sydney Games.
