| deRiel Wins Women's Silver Medal

 | | American Emily deRiel, in only her first year of international competition, won the silver medal in the Olympic debut of the women's pentathlon. DeRiel's medal was the first in pentathlon for an American since 1960. Stephanie Cook of Great Britain took the gold. The men's competition turned out to be a disappointing one for American Chad Senior, who was in first place after the first three events. A skittish horse made the difference as Senior fell to sixth place, and Dmitry Svatkovsky of Russia won the gold.
