Sunday, October 1 Alcohol, speed factors in crash
Associated Press
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Corey Wilkes, an alternate for
the U.S. Olympic weightlifting team, died after the motorcycle he
was riding crashed late Friday night, police said.
Alcohol and the speed of the motorcycle were factors in the
crash, which also killed a woman who was with Wilkes, Sgt. Jerry
Steckler said. The woman's name was being withheld pending
notification of relatives.
Steckler said a coroner's examination would determine who was
driving.
Wilkes and the woman were fatally injured when their motorcycle
ran off a road, tore through a chain-link fence and hit a guardrail
shortly before midnight Friday.
They were taken to Memorial Hospital, where they were treated
before being pronounced dead about an hour after the crash was
reported, Steckler said.
Wilkes, the gold medalist in the 85-kilogram class at the U.S.
national championships this year, was an alternate on the American
team to the Summer Games but did not travel to Sydney.
