Longley hurt in Australia's loss to France

Center Luc Longley, acquired by the Knicks on Sept. 21 in a four-team trade for Patrick Ewing, is out for 8-to-10 weeks because of torn knee ligaments, ESPN's David Aldrdige reported Saturday.

Longley sustained the injury while playing for the Australian Olympic team against France on Friday in Sydney, Australia. France stunned Australia 76-52 to advance to its first gold medal game in 52 years.

Longley, who played for the Phoenix Suns the past two seasons, received an MRI on Saturday that showed the damage. He will not need surgery but will be out of action while rehabilitating the knee.

The Knicks open training camp Monday and their first preseason game is Oct. 10; they open the regular season Oct. 31.

If Longley misses exactly eight weeks, his first game would be the Knicks' 15th of the regular season -- Nov. 27 vs. Vancouver.
