Aussies beat South Korea to go 3-0-1

SYDNEY, Australia -- The members of the Australian women's field hockey team are rewarding the home fans they aren't used to seeing.

Katrina Powell scored in the seventh minute and Alison Peek and Nikki Hudson also scored as Australia downed South Korea 3-0 Friday to advance to the medal pool.

"The crowd was fantastic," Australia's Kate Starre said. "Because we've never played in front of a home crowd it is really inspiring."

In other women's games, the Netherlands played to a 2-2 tie with Germany, South Africa edged China 1-0 and Britain blanked Spain 2-0.

Hudson's goal came in the game's final seconds.

"It was nice to finish on a good note," Hudson said as Australia improved to 3-0-1. "I was glad to get a goal even if it was on the buzzer."

Australia will next play a medal pool game Saturday.

"We have been beaten by New Zealand before and have had hard games against China," captain Alyson Annan said. "There is some hard work to do in the upcoming matches."

South Korea, in fourth place, fell to 0-2-2.

Netherlands 2, Germany 2 -- The Netherlands (2-1-1), the bronze-medal winners at the 1996 Atlanta Games, got goals from Susan van Der Wielen and captain Carole Thate to earn a draw with Germany (1-1-2) and advance to the medal pool.

Britain 2, Spain 0 -- Britain (1-2-1) finally won its first game of the tournament, but it came too late to keep the team in medal contention. Spain (1-1-2), which finished third in Pool C, already clinched a spot in the next round.

South Africa 1, China 0 -- South Africa (1-2-1) also won for the first time, getting a goal from Jacqueline Geyser in the 52nd minute to top China (2-2-0). Despite the loss, China advanced to the medal pool ranked second in Pool D.
