Tuesday, September 26 Miller still hoping to run 400 relay
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia -- World champion Inger Miller officially
withdrew from the women's 200 meters Tuesday because the left
hamstring injury that forced her out of the 100 last week has not
healed.
Miller still hopes to run in the 400-meter relay this weekend,
U.S. Track and Field spokeswoman Jill Geer said.
Miller was replaced in the 200 by Torri Edwards, who was fourth
in that event at the U.S. trials. Edwards also replaced Miller in
the 100.
The other two Americans in the first-round heats of the 200 set
for Wednesday (Tuesday night EDT) are Marion Jones and Nanceen
Perry.
Australia's Cathy Freeman, who won the 400 on Tuesday, also is
entered in the 200. Her last major victory at that distance was at
the 1994 Commonwealth Games.
Miller hurt her hamstring while training at UCLA on Sept. 7, two
days before she left for Sydney. When she pulled out of the 100
last week, she was hopeful the injury would heal in time for the
200.
Miller was second to Jones in the 100 and 200 at the U.S. trials
and was considered Jones' chief rival in both events.
