Ricky Williams: "In the same breath"

Ricky Williams, the University of Texas running back, was the 64th winner of the Heisman Trophy in 1998. He is the second Longhorn to win the prize,
Ricky Williams
In 1998, Ricky Williams led the nation in rushing with 2,124 yards and won the Heisman Trophy.
following in the footsteps of Earl Campbell in 1977.

When he won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's premier running back in 1997, Williams struck up a warm friendship with the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner. After Walker's death during the 1998 season, Williams received permission from the NCAA to wear Walker's number 37 when Texas met Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas. "I thought it would be neat to wear 37 in the house that Doak built," said Williams. "I'm playing with him in my heart."

The List
Ricky Williams lists some of the Heisman winners that he admires.

Bo Jackson - 1985, Auburn
I admire Bo Jackson for playing football and baseball (As I did in college).

Marcus Allen - 1981, USC
Marcus Allen was such a versatile player. He was able to switch positions between high school and college and he was such an amazing running back.

Paul Hornung - 1956, Notre Dame
He was a great athlete.

Earl Campbell - 1977, Texas
Earl Campbell was another great Longhorn and everyone seemed to nickname me "Little Earl."

Doak Walker - 1948, SMU
I had the opportunity to get to know Doak Walker after receiving the Doak Walker award in college and feel very fortunate to have had the chance to know him on a personal level.

Favorite Heisman season memory
I think what is most memorable is how we played as a team that season. Everyone predicted we would have a horrible season. But, we gelled together as a team that season. We beat Nebraska, which was a big victory that we all worked hard for. But, I have always viewed the Heisman award as a team award. That senior year we worked together as a team, and I felt like being presented with the Heisman was an honor to share with my entire team that year at Texas.

Heisman presentation memory
Prior to the presentation, I enjoyed hanging out with Michael Bishop, Cade McNown andTim Couch. We had a lot of fun together and we saw the sites of New York.

I remember walking in the Heisman room and admiring all the former Heisman winners' portraits. To me, that was really neat. I didn't really imagine my portrait would be up there one day.

I remember sitting there that night and seeing all the former Heisman award winners and NFL Hall of Famers. It was neat to meet Marcus Allen, Joe Paterno, and some of the other well known football personnel. Sitting there as they began the presentation, I initially thought that the ceremony wasn't too big a deal. However, I began looking around the room and listening to what the president had to say. Then, it all began to hit me. This was the Heisman Trophy awards ceremony, and some of the best athletes to play football have won the award. It felt really neat to hear my name called, and mentioned in the same breath as Marcus Allen, Earl Campbell, and Doak Walker. I walked up to the platform feeling very honored. I felt honored to be receiving the award for my team as well as myself.
