Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Ricky Williams: "In the same breath" Ricky Williams, the University of Texas running back, was the 64th winner of the Heisman Trophy in 1998. He is the second Longhorn to win the prize,
When he won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's premier running back in 1997, Williams struck up a warm friendship with the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner. After Walker's death during the 1998 season, Williams received permission from the NCAA to wear Walker's number 37 when Texas met Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas. "I thought it would be neat to wear 37 in the house that Doak built," said Williams. "I'm playing with him in my heart."

Favorite Heisman season memory
Heisman presentation memory I remember walking in the Heisman room and admiring all the former Heisman winners' portraits. To me, that was really neat. I didn't really imagine my portrait would be up there one day. I remember sitting there that night and seeing all the former Heisman award winners and NFL Hall of Famers. It was neat to meet Marcus Allen, Joe Paterno, and some of the other well known football personnel. Sitting there as they began the presentation, I initially thought that the ceremony wasn't too big a deal. However, I began looking around the room and listening to what the president had to say. Then, it all began to hit me. This was the Heisman Trophy awards ceremony, and some of the best athletes to play football have won the award. It felt really neat to hear my name called, and mentioned in the same breath as Marcus Allen, Earl Campbell, and Doak Walker. I walked up to the platform feeling very honored. I felt honored to be receiving the award for my team as well as myself. |
