Gary Beban: With award comes responsibility

Gary Beban
UCLA quarterback Gary Beban won the 1967 Heisman Trophy.
Gary Beban, the 1967 Heisman winner, quarterbacked UCLA to 23 victories against five losses and two ties in his three-year reign with the Bruins. He completed 240 of 454 passes for a total of 4,070 yards, while himself rushing for 1,280 yards, crossing the goal line 35 times, and running for two 2-point conversions. Against USC his senior year, Beban completed 16 out of 24 passes for 301 yards and two touchdown strikes of 53 and 20 yards.

The List
Gary Beban lists some of the Heisman winners that he admires.

Jay Berwanger - 1935, Chicago
Not only was Jay the first winner, he has stood for what the trophy means.

Larry Kelley - 1936, Yale
Unfortunately, Larry recently passed away. He was a spirit, the spirit of good people.

Mike Garrett - 1965, USC
I admire Mike not only for his skill, but for his sportsmanship. He had the courage to walk in and offer us good luck in the Rose Bowl after we had upset USC. It was an example of sportsmanship that I always wanted to follow.

Pete Dawkins - 1958, Army
I admire Pete for all he has accomplished on and off the field. He represented his company in the military and was after he left.

Steve Owens - 1969, Oklahoma
Steve has offered constant support of the Heisman Trophy and its programs. he has enabled the foundation to extend aid to the less fortunate.

Favorite Heisman season memory
It would be the opportunity to play in the 1967 USC-UCLA game. Even in a loss, it was a special game. We were playing for the city, Rose Bowl, national championship and two players were competing for the Heisman. The loss was disappointing, but it was still an accomplishment.

Heisman presentation memory
The one that stands out for me is Joe Paterno's speech the year Doug Flutie won (1984). I'm not sure that Joe didn't scare Doug. He talked about the responsibilities that came with the Heisman. I won't forget it and can only imagine how Doug felt. I think he made all the recipients consider the responsibilites of this great honor.
