BAKERSFIELD, California (Ticker) -- Marco Sturm scored a goal and set up another the San Jose Sharks remained unbeaten with a 3-1 exhibition victory over the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks made Los Angeles pay for Garry Galley's double-minor for high sticking when Ron Stern scored his second preseason goal with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first period. Sturm helped set up that goal, then doubled San Jose's lead in the opening minute of the second period when he beat goaltender Jamie Storr for his third of the exhibition season. Stephane Matteau added his second goal with 4 1/2 minutes left in the second as the Sharks took a 3-0 lead. They have won four of their last five games. Steve Shields stopped 35 shots and improved to 1-0-2 for San Jose, which plays Phoenix on Monday in its exhibition finale. The Sharks begin the regular season on October 2 against Calgary. Donald Audette's third goal with 1:07 left in the second period was the lone tally for Los Angeles. Storr made 25 saves but fell to 1-2-1 in the Kings' final preseason contest. Los Angeles opens the season with a seven-game road trip, beginning October 2 at Nashville. The game drew 5,004 fans at Centennial Garden, home of the West Coast Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors.
