CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Dan Cloutier and Kevin Hodson combined to stop 36 shots as the Tampa Bay Lightning posted a 5-2 exhibition victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers on draft day, Cloutier turned aside 20 of 21 shots before he was ejected 14:04 into the second period for slashing Dixon Ward. Hodson finished up, stopping 16 of 17 shots.

Tampa Bay used a three-goal second period to put away the game. Alexandre Daigle started the outburst when he scored eight minutes into the period to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead. Mike McBain tallied just over four minutes later and Stephane Richer capped the period by scoring with 43 seconds left for a 4-1 cushion.

Robert Petrovicky and Vincent Lecavalier also scored for the Lightning, who improved to 2-3 in exhibition play.

Mika Noronen made 21 saves through the first two periods for the Sabres before being replaced by Martin Biron, who stopped nine of 10 shots.

Michael Peca and rookie Maxim Afinogenov scored for the Sabres, who fell to 0-1-1.

The game drew a crowd of 6,249 at the Gund Arena, home of the International Hockey League's Cleveland Lumberjacks -- Tampa Bay's top minor league affiliate.
