Oakland heads to Mile High Stadium as the Broncos are in position to sweep this always-intense rivalry for the second straight season and the fourth time in five years. Six weeks ago at Oakland (Week 5), Broncos QB Brian Griese threw for 234 yards and a score (1 INT) and PK Jason Elam added three field goals as Mike Shanahan's team got its first victory of 1999, 16-13. While Oakland has nearly doubled Denver's win total in the overall standings (50-28-2, including playoffs), Broncos have excelled as of late, prevailing in four straight and eight of the last nine meetings dating back to Mike Shanahan's arrival in the Mile High City in 1995. As for the Raiders' last appearance at Mile High Stadium (Week 12 of '98), Broncos RB Terrell Davis rushed for 162 yards and the Broncos blew open a close game with 23 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as Denver rolled to a 40-14 triumph. The Raiders have lost four straight at Denver dating back to 1995, by a combined score of 122-36 (27-0, 24-19, 31-3 and 40-14).
Numbers: After opening 7-3 under head coach Jon Gruden, the Raiders are 6-9 in their last 15 games dating back to '98. After committing just 14 turnovers in their first eight games (6-2) in 1998, the Raiders have committed 45 turnovers in their last 17 contests (7-10). After allowing just 175 points in their first 10 games in 1998 (7-3), the Raiders have allowed 343 points in their last 15 games (6-9). Including playoffs (1997-99), the Broncos are 35-4 when they total more rushing attempts than their opponent, 1-9 when Denver's opponent totals more rushing attempts. The Broncos have forced nine turnovers in three wins, seven turnovers in seven losses in '99. The Broncos have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games. They have allowed two or more touchdown passes in three straight games.
Things to look for: While the up-and-down Raiders have managed to keep their heads above water, time is certainly running out for Jon Gruden's team as even 10 wins might not be enough to ensure a playoff berth in the top-heavy AFC. But that could all be a moot point if Oakland's talented defense continues its inconsistent play against the run, hence a large dose of Broncos' rookie RB Olandis Gary. Etc.: The Raiders are 33-16-1 lifetime on Monday Night Football (9-13 on Monday nights since 1986), including 20-14-1on the road. The Broncos are making their second of three Monday night appearances this season (0-1 in '99) and are just 18-22-1 lifetime on Monday Night Football, including 13-6-1 at home. The Broncos are 6-3 on Monday Night Football under head coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan owns a 7-4 mark on Monday Night Football with the Broncos (6-3 from 1995-99) and Raiders (1-1 in 1988), one of those victories with the Raiders a 30-27 overtime triumph at Mile High Stadium in 1988. This marks the 10th Monday night meeting (tied with Cowboys/Redskins and Bills/Dolphins for the most frequent matchups in the history of Monday Night Football) between the Raiders and Broncos, with the teams tied (4-4-1) in the previous nine MNF encounters, however, the Broncos have prevailed in the last three Monday night battles dating back to 1995 (27-0 at Denver in 1995, 22-21 at Oakland in 1996, 31-3 at Denver in 1997) by a combined score of 80-24. After going 3-5 vs. AFC West foes during his first season with Denver in 1995, Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is 23-6 vs. divisional competition (including 1-0 in playoffs) since 1996. The Broncos are 4-9 in their last 13 regular-season contests dating back to '98. |
