Picks: Points at a premium in Miami

Until last week, the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins were sailing along nicely in the highly competitive AFC East.

Damon Huard
Damon Huard will try to duplicate his Week 6 performance against the Patriots.
But both lost, making this week's meeting in Miami even more critical. In the AFC, someone could finish 10-6 or even 11-5 and not make it to the postseason.

This is a replay of one of the season's better games, a 31-30 victory by the Dolphins in Foxboro, decided on a touchdown pass from Damon Huard to Stanley Pritchett with 23 seconds left. That was the last time Dan Marino played -- he left with a sore neck and shoulder, giving way to Huard.

Huard won that game and his next three starts, but lost last week in Buffalo as the Dolphins gained only 101 yards.

The Patriots were equally unimpressive Monday night, losing 24-17 to the Jets, the only team in the AFC East that's not a playoff contender.

"Coming off a game like this, we always come back and rally around each other," New England fullback Tony Carter says. "We just have to put a little more emphasis on next week. We've got to get it done."

That won't be easy.

The Dolphins, who are favored by four, are allowing just 13 points per game at home. In their meeting in Foxboro, only 10 of the Pats' 30 points were generated by the offense -- two of the three New England TDs came on interception returns.

So maybe the Pats can put things together. More likely ... Dolphins 17, Patriots 12.

Pittsburgh (plus 5½) at Tennessee: The Steelers are awful at home, better on the road. Titans 14, Steelers 12.

New York Giants (plus 5½) at Washington: Bad memories. For the Giants, a 50-21 loss to Washington in the first meeting. For the 'Skins, three losses in four games, including a disastrous 35-28 defeat in Philadelphia last week. Redskins 24, Giants 23.

Detroit (plus 4½) at Green Bay: If they invented a three-point conversion, Bobby Ross would try it. Lions 23, Packers 20.

Oakland (plus 1{) at Denver (Monday night): Credit Mike Shanahan: The Broncos keep playing hard despite all the injuries. Broncos 17, Raiders 14.

Buffalo (minus 2½) at New York Jets: Credit Bill Parcells: The Jets keep playing hard despite all the injuries. Bills 17, Jets 14.

Seattle (plus 3) at Kansas City: The Chiefs are very, very good at home. Chiefs 22, Seahawks 16.

Indianapolis (minus 7) at Philadelphia: The Eagles are tough at home. But the Colts are sizzling and, if anyone cares, Marvin Harrison is a Philadelphian. Colts 24, Eagles 13.

St. Louis (minus 7) at San Francisco: Just six weeks ago, the Rams broke a 17-game losing streak to the 49ers. Times change. Rams 42, 49ers 10.

Dallas (off) at Arizona: Troy and Michael won't play, Deion might not. Emmitt might. Cardinals 19, Cowboys 15.

Atlanta (plus 7) at Tampa Bay: Trent Dilfer has suddenly found it, whatever it is. Bucs 17, Falcons 2.

New Orleans (plus 12½) at Jacksonville: The Jaguars have trouble scoring 12½ points in a game without Fred Taylor. But ... Jaguars 13, Saints 0.

Carolina (minus 5½) at Cleveland: Is this the first home win for the red-hot Browns? Panthers 12, Browns 10.

Chicago (pick 'em) at San Diego: Journeyman Jim Miller threw for 422 yards in the Bears' loss to the Vikings last week. The Chargers have had about 422 turnovers this year. Bears 20, Chargers 11.

Baltimore (minus 5½) at Cincinnati: The Ravens' Priest Holmes ran for 400 yards against the Bengals in two games last year. He doesn't even start now. Ravens 26, Bengals 9.

Last week: 4-11 (spread); 7-8(straight up). Season: 62-76-5 (spread); 84-59 (straight up).
