About the play: Rich Gannon has been a great addition to a Raiders team with a lot of weapons. This play is perfect for Gannon because he is accurate and gets rid of the ball quickly.

The Raiders begin in a bunch formation, which really becomes a scatter route. This route and formation is called to cause the defenders difficulty in deciphering who their man is and where they are going.

The route progression is Y (tight end Rickey Dudley) in the flat, to H (James Jett) on the corner, to Z (Tim Brown) on his whip route. Gannon will take his five-step drop and peek to the flat. If no one is outside Dudley after the snap, then Gannon will hit him with the pass.

If that is stopped, then Gannon will go to Jett on the corner or Brown on his delay/whip route. Brown is Gannon's outlet if the other two are covered. Gannon will throw on timing and in front of Dudley so he can turn the corner after the catch.

Keys to the play: The release of Dudley, Jett and Brown. They must release in the proper order to time the route and force built-in picks against man-to-man coverage. They must release in this order: 1.) Jett on the corner (he has the farthest to go); 2.) Brown, so he can form a pick on the strong-side linebacker who has Dudley in coverage; 3.) Dudley, who is the No. 1 choice but has the shortest route, so he will go last.

Critical player: Dudley must get his head around right as he clears Brown's release. He must look for the ball right now, so Gannon does not have to wait for the strong-side linebacker to get back in coverage.

Defensive strategy: The best defense is outside zone coverage so the routes break into the defense. This play is used anywhere on the field and is almost impossible to stop with a cagey quarterback like Gannon.
