The top teams in the Big Ten might not have an overwhelming number of recuits, but they make up for that with outstanding talent. Michigan's got to be the class of the Big Ten. Safeties Prescott Burgess and Ryan Mundy combined with LBs Shawn Crable and LaMarr Woodley make this an unbelievable group. Ohio State is not too far behind the Wolverines. DL Sian Cotton, S Ira Guilford, TE Louis Irizarry and DB Donte Whitner headline the Buckeyes' haul. Here's my breakdown of the top classes in the Big Ten:
| 1. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES |
| |
The Skinny |
Key Recruit |
Sleeper |
 |
Perhaps the most efficient class in the nation. Only 17 signed, but 10 were All-Americans.
|
S Prescott Burgess: Great range, speed and hitting ability. A bone-jarring tackler. |
LB James Presley: Athletic talent with great speed, instincts and balance. |
| 2. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES |
| |
The Skinny |
Key Recruit |
Sleeper |
 |
Lost some key in-state players to Michigan, but signed a number of top players out-of-state.
|
DB Donte Whitner: Prep superstar with outstanding range and instincts. One of the nation's best. |
DL Brandon Maupin: an explosive end with long arms, exceptionally quick feet and great balance. |
| 3. ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI |
| |
The Skinny |
Key Recruit |
Sleeper |
 |
Ron Turner claims this is his best recruiting class ever, and I won't argue with that.
|
WR Kelvin Hayden: Big-time JUCO player who should make an immediate impact.
|
RB Marcus Mason: Small size, but an explosive, strong and active back. |
| 4. IOWA HAWKEYES |
| |
The Skinny |
Key Recruit |
Sleeper |
 |
Recruited well nationally after successful 2002 season. Filled needs at QB, OL and RB.
|
OL Mike Jones: Aggressive ball player with long arms, excellent technique and explosive moves. |
QB Eric McCollom: Looked great in Shrine Bowl game. Skills to be good passer/runner. |
| 5. PURDUE BOILERMAKERS |
| |
The Skinny |
Key Recruit |
Sleeper |
 |
Tiller and Co. did a great job recruiting Michigan and landed six of the top 12 in Indiana.
|
DE Doug Van Dyke: Very quick-footed DE with long arms and an aggressive nature.
|
WR Jake Cunningham: Explosive speed and catches the ball well. |
