Wolfpack at the head of the ACC class

By Tom Lemming
ESPN.com

Florida State might have rebounded to win the ACC in 2002, but the 'Noles couldn't close the gap on Signing Day. NC State supplanted FSU as the ACC's top recruiting class in 2003. Chuck Amato and his staff will bring in 28 new players this year. The balanced Wolfpack class includes RB Darrell Blackman, QBs Chris Hawkins and Marcus Stone, WR Jimmie Sutton, LB Stephen Tulloch, TE Jamesly Jean and DB LeRue Rumph. Here's my look at the top five classes in the ACC:

1. NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK
   The Skinny  Key Recruit  Sleeper
The 2003 Wolfpack recruiting class is their best in modern times.
RB Darrell Blackman: Electrifying player with speed, balance and cutting ability. LB Stephen Tulloch: A short, but powerful and explosive linebacker from Florida.

2. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES
   The Skinny  Key Recruit  Sleeper
Not the kind of year FSU expected. It's the lowest rated FSU class in 10 years, but still came up with some quality players.
LB Ernie Sims: Size, strength, speed.
DB Antonio Cromartie: Great speed, body control, cover skills.
DE Alex Boston: Outstanding agility and hard hitter. Could play LB or DE.

3. North Carolina Tar Heels
   The Skinny  Key Recruit  Sleeper
The season didn't go as well as expected, but recruiting was better than expected.
WR Adarius Bowman: Great combination of size and speed.
LB Larry Edwards: Hard hitting linebacker with great speed.

4. Virginia Cavaliers
   The Skinny  Key Recruit  Sleeper
Followed last year's No. 5 class with a solid year, even though talent was down in Virginia.
LB Vince Redd: Explosive, quick. LB or DE
TE Jon Stupar: Great hands and speed.
WR Shannon Lane: Plenty of size and speed.

5. Clemson Tigers
   The Skinny  Key Recruit  Sleeper
They lost the top three players in the state, but did a good job elsewhere in the South. A solid class.
RB Tramaine Billie: Super fast with great vision. South Carolina sprint champion.
QB C.J. Gaddis: Outstanding arm and tremendous quickness.
