GAME LOG
DETROIT (AP) -- Ryan Glynn insisted he felt fine. Some of his Texas teammates weren't so sure, and Rangers manager Johnny Oates took no chances. Glynn won for the first time since an Aug. 11 fainting spell at Texas, working 6 1/3 solid innings as the Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 Sunday for just their third victory in 12 games. "I was fine the whole game," said Glynn, who was diagnosed with a fainting condition he's controlling through medication and diet. Glynn (4-3) said that at one point first baseman Frank Catalanotto thought the right-hander was wobbly during a very hot and humid day. "I had a bug on my face I was trying to get off and Frank thought I was spacing out again," Glynn said. Glynn had thrown only 81 pitches when Oates removed him with a 4-1 lead in the seventh. "The only reason I was cautious today was when the clouds burned out, it was like an oven out there," Oates said. "I'm not usually bothered by it, but I had to sit down a couple of times." Glynn allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. "He pitched the ball extremely well today," Oates said. "There is a difference between pitching and throwing and he pitched well today." Glynn passed out in the dugout after he came out of an Aug. 11 start against Boston. He went on the disabled list the next day and returned Aug. 29 against Cleveland, allowing five runs in a 12-1 loss. "I was excited about being back and everything was up. I was rushing," Glynn said. "Today I had a runner on in every inning and slowed the game down and kept the ball down." John Wetteland, who pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 36 chances, and two other pitchers combined for 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief. Jeff Weaver (9-12) gave up four runs on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings, his shortest stint of the season, and fell to 0-3 for his career against the Rangers. "I was working from behind and giving them a good opportunity to put a good swing on the ball, Weaver said. "I've been working trying to get to the late innings; that's what's most important and I didn't do that today." Detroit, which began the day four games behind Cleveland in the AL wild card standings, saw its three-game winning streak end. "It's a little disappointing because Glynn's not a household name and that club's a little flat," Tigers manager Phil Garner said. "We wanted to put them down. Two of three isn't anything to sneeze at, but winning today would've been a big win." Two-out RBI singles by B.J. Waszgis and Luis Alicea gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Three straight hits, including Ricky Ledee's run-scoring single, made it 3-0 in the third. The Rangers added another run in the fourth to finish off Weaver. Alicea led off with a single and scored on Catalanotto's double into the right-field gap. The Tigers scored in their half of the fourth on Damion Easley's RBI groundout after Tony Clark singled and Deivi Cruz doubled. Cruz made it to third with one out but was stranded. "We just failed to come up with some runs when we needed them," Garner said. "In critical games, those are the ones you've got to get in." Glynn had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth but got out of it when he struck out Bobby Higginson on a 3-2 pitch and Juan Gonzalez lined to second. "Higginson chased a bad pitch. He was aggressive and wanted to drive in the runs," Glynn said. "Juan, we were trying to pitch him inside and it worked out with a soft liner." Game notesCruz's double in the fourth inning was his 41st of the season. He's the first Tiger to top 40 doubles since Lance Parrish had 42 in 1983. ...
