Hudson 4-0 lifetime vs. Toronto

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

TORONTO (AP) -- Tim Hudson owns the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hudson won his 15th game and his third against Toronto this season as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Blue Jays 4-3 Sunday.

Tim Hudson
Tim Hudson followed up a one-hit shutout of the White Sox in his last start with a solid outing vs. the Blue Jays. Hudson is 15-6.

"My style of pitching goes with their style of hitting," Hudson said. "I like aggressive hitters."

The 25 year-old right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA against the Blue Jays this season and 4-0 in his career.

"It looked like he read our mind," said Tony Batista, who went 0-for-4.

Hudson (15-6), who pitched a one-hit shutout against Chicago in his last start, allowed three runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out five.

"He shut us down," Dave Martinez said. "He had good control of all his pitches, and he kept the ball down."

Terrence Long, Miguel Tejada and Jason Giambi each hit solo homers for the Athletics, who have won two straight after losing their previous three.

Down 4-1 with two outs in the eighth, Toronto's Alex Gonzalez singled and Martinez lined a double into the gap in right-center, but Long barehanded the ball and attempted a lateral throw to right-fielder Matt Stairs, who wasn't able to catch the errant throw. As the ball rolled in right field, Gonzalez and Martinez scored on Long's two-base error.

"If it works everything is fine, but it didn't work," Long said. "I've done it before. I just got caught up in the game."

Oakland manager Art Howe has seen it work before, but he won't again.

"That play will be removed from his repertoire," Howe said.

Jim Mecir got two outs for his fourth save.

"They've pitched us tough the last couple of days," Toronto's Carlos Delgado said. "We'll have to come back tomorrow and tie the series. It will be an important game."

After Randy Velarde doubled in the third, Giambi hit an infield single to Toronto starter Esteban Loaiza (8-10), who threw wildly to third, allowing Velarde to score an unearned run.

Toronto scored in the third when Delgado doubled, advanced to third on a grounder and scored on Batista's RBI grounder.

"We need to play like that to defeat Hudson," Batista said.

Long homered in the fifth. Tejada homered in the seventh, his 23rd, and Giambi homered in the eighth, his 30th.

Down 2-1 in the sixth, Martinez and Delgado hit consecutive one-out singles, but Brad Fullmer hit into a double play to end the threat.

Loaiza gave up four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in eight innings.
