War Emblem impresses as Belmont nears
by Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- War Emblem looked every bit the Triple Crown contender after a strong workout Wednesday at Churchill Downs.

Ten days before trying to win the Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner breezed five furlongs in 1:00 3-5.

``Looks like he hasn't lost it, huh?'' trainer Bob Baffert said after exercise rider Dana Barnes worked the colt. ``He was pretty impressive.''

It was the next-to-last workout before War Emblem runs in the Belmont on June 8 and attempts to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. The final work is scheduled for next Tuesday at Churchill Downs, before the colt is shipped to New York.

``He knows he's a good horse,'' Baffert said. ``He's got attitude and that attitude is going to help him at the Belmont.''

Baffert said the 3-year-old has put on a little weight since the Preakness.

``He's always been a good eater, which is good,'' said Baffert, who came close to the Triple Crown with Silver Charm in 1997 and Real Quiet in 1998.

Both won the Derby and Preakness, and both finished second in the Belmont.

War Emblem went wire-to-wire in the Derby, winning by four lengths over Proud Citizen. He took the Preakness by three-quarters of a length over Magic Weisner.

Both Magic Weisner and Proud Citizen are expected to run in the 1½-mile Belmont, which is expected to have about a dozen horses in the field.

``We're keeping him sharp, we're keeping him healthy,'' said Baffert. ``If it happens, it'll be history in the making.''
