Salo's 26 saves help Oilers salvage tie

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- If the Edmonton Oilers match the level of their opponents, a successful season is sure to follow.

Tommy Salo stopped 26 shots and Igor Ulanov scored a third-period goal to give the Edmonton Oilers a 1-1 tie with the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.

"It's a good start for us," Salo said after the Oilers improved to 1-0-1. "If we keep battling like we did in these two games, we're going to get lots of points this year."

Salo made 33 saves in a 2-1 victory Friday night over the Detroit Red Wings.

Ulanov beat Patrick Roy 10:26 into the third on a slap shot from the point that glanced off the leg of defender Martin Skoula.

The goal, Ulanov's first with the Oilers since being acquired in a trade with Montreal late last season, spoiled Roy's bid for his 49th career shutout.

"Three out of four points against two of the top teams in the league is not bad," said Oilers winger Bill Guerin, who assisted on the goal. "We would've like to have won tonight, but we played last night and they played great defense."

Ulanov scored just seconds after Edmonton killed Colorado's fifth power play. Guerin carried the puck into the Avalanche zone, held onto it in the corner and found Ulanov crossing the blue line.

Ulanov nearly got the winner in overtime, forcing Roy to make a tough save on a shot from the slot.

"We dug down and found a way to get the tie in the third period," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "The first two periods weren't indicative of the type of hockey we normally play. But there are going to be a lot of nights like this.

"It's been a good start. That's what we talked about between the second and third periods -- that it was a good opportunity to have a heck of a start. The guys really responded."

Joe Sakic almost scored for Colorado in the extra period, but his shot rang off the crossbar.

Defenseman Greg de Vries gave the Avalanche the lead midway through the second period, banking the puck in off Salo's skates.

Stephane Yelle won a faceoff in the Oilers' zone back to de Vries at the point. He went wide down the boards, cut toward Salo and scored from a tight angle.

That was the only mistake Salo made.

Colorado's defense made things easy for Roy in the first two periods Saturday, limiting Edmonton to six shots until late in the second. "I thought we did a lot of good things tonight," said Roy, who made 20 saves. "We killed penalties really well and were sharp in our own end, except on the goal. And Tommy Salo played really well. He kept them in the game."

Colorado has tied both of its games this season, also skating to a 2-2 draw with Dallas.

Game notes
Roy still needs four victories to break Terry Sawchuk's NHL record of 447 career victories. ... The teams were a combined 0-for-13 on the power play.
