The Southern Conference tournament moves out of the state of North Carolina for the first time since 1984 this season. The league will stage its postseason event at the BI-LO Center in Greenville, S.C., this year and next, then move the event for the two years thereafter to the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, S.C. The Southern Conference conducted its tournament for the last four years at the Greensboro Coliseum. The 11 years previous to that (1984-95) it was played at the Asheville Civic Center.
Two new head coaches will join the league this season. Fran McCaffrey replaces Randy Peele at UNC Greensboro and Jeff Price replaces Gregg Polinsky at Georgia Southern.
College of Charleston coach John Kresse enters the season just seven wins from career victory No. 500. He ranks third in the nation in winning percentage (.803, 493-121) among active head coaches.
The Southern Conference unveiled a new logo in July which features prominently the acronym "SoCon", a term commonly used by the media in reference to the league. The logo redesign is part of a comprehensive strategic marketing plan that the league is embarking on in an effort to increase visibility.
