Hawks celebrate Wilkins, win over Clippers

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

ATLANTA (AP) -- Lorenzen Wright toiled for three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Hawks' Lorenzon Wright had a bird's-eye view of Michael Olowokandi's first-half dunk.
Saturday night was payback time.

Wright scored a season-high 28 points against his former team and Jason Terry added 18 as the Atlanta Hawks beat Los Angeles 108-88 for their fourth victory in six games.

"It was the Clippers. I wanted to get them," said Wright, acquired in a sign-and-trade deal on Aug. 8, 1999. "We were going to come out and play hard against these guys. All my shots were falling tonight. I just shot them and concentrated."

Wright has stared the last 15 games and averaged 16.9 points filling in for forward Alan Henderson, who is on the injured list with an ailing shoulder.

"I played hard," Wright said. "I did what I usually do. I was picking it up and letting it go."

The Hawks wore retro uniforms, and Dominique Wilkins' No. 21 jersey was retired at halftime.

Brevin Knight, starting his second game since being traded from Cleveland to Atlanta, scored 14 points. Dion Glover had 13 points, and Matt Maloney 12 for the Hawks, who won their sixth straight home game against the Clippers.

Terry was impressed with Glover's play at both ends of the floor.

"He was out with an injury," Terry said. "Now he's coming back and getting playing time. It's tough coming off the bench. With Jim (Jackson) gone, the door is definitely open for Dion. All he has to do is continue to come hard and work hard every day."

Earl Boykins' 15 points led Los Angeles, which lost for the eighth time in its last 11 games.

Los Angeles added to its league lead in turnovers. The Clippers committed 22 turnovers that led to 34 Atlanta points. Lamar Odom had a game-high five turnovers.

"We were awful, and they beat us in every phase of the game," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "They outrebounded us. They played with more intensity. We were just bad. That's the only way I can put it."

With 8:47 remaining in the game, the Clippers had a chance to cut the Hawks' lead to six, but Darius Miles was called for charging. A 6-foot jumper by Wright restored Atlanta's 10-point lead.

"The biggest thing we need to do is play hard from beginning to end," Miles said. "We had a bad first half and we tried to come back. We got it down to six or so, and they hit a lot of shots down the stretch."

A pair of free throws by Jeff McInnis made it 90-81 -- the last juncture Los Angeles was within 10 points.

Dikembe Mutombo had nine rebounds for the Hawks, who won the battle of the boards 39-34.

Terry finished with a game-best eight assists.

"It was a consistent effort both defensively and offensively," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We had a lot of different guys step in there and play awfully well."

Game notes
Clippers forward Corey Maggette was taken to Piedmont Hospital after taking an elbow to the left ear in the third quarter. Trainer Jasen Powell described the injury as "ear trauma." Powell did not give a prognosis on Maggette's availability for Monday's game at Indianapolis. ... Atlanta activated forward Chris Crawford before the game and released rookie Andy Panko. ... A crowd of 19,445 was Atlanta's first sellout of the season.
