LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Larry Hughes scored 29 points and Chris Mills scored 10 of his 18 points in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter as the Golden State Warriors beat the Seattle SuperSonics 117-113 Thursday night at Staples Center.

Antawn Jamison added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Warriors (2-2), who on Friday will play the winner of the Cleveland-Los Angeles Lakers game, scheduled for later Thursday night.

Rookie Desmond Mason led Seattle with 20 points, Gary Payton had 17 points and nine assists, and Patrick Ewing had six points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes.

The teams were tied at 88 after three quarters before Mills opened the fourth with seven consecutive points, hitting a 20-footer, a 3-pointer and a layup. He added a free throw and a 13-foot turnaround jumper that capped a 14-2 run and gave Golden State a 102-90 cushion with 6:46 to play.

The Sonics got as close as 105-100 on Ruben Wolkowski's layup with 3:35 remaining, but Mills' dunk and layup in the final 54 seconds clinched it.

Seattle guard Brent Barry, upset over a perceived foul that wasn't called, got two technical fouls from referee Luis Grillo with 3:41 left in the third quarter and was ejected with the SuperSonics trailing 78-72.

The Sonics (2-2), already playing without Ruben Patterson because of a bruised left thigh and Pervis Ellison because of an illness in his family, also lost forward Rashard Lewis after he sprained his right knee with 1:17 left in the first quarter.

The Warriors, who lost all four games to Seattle last season, opened up a 38-23 lead with 13 first-quarter points by Hughes and a running jumper by Mills in the opening minute of the second. The Sonics rallied within five before the Warriors went on a 12-2 run that restored their 15-point margin with 55 seconds left in the half.

It was the first time that Seattle's Paul Westphal and Golden State's Dave Cowens, teammates on the Boston Celtics' 1974 NBA championship team, coached against each other.
