Herges was 2-2 in 40 appearances for the Padres with three saves and a 2.86 ERA.
In return, the Padres get minor league right-hander Clay Hensley, along with a player to be named or cash considerations.
Herges, 33, spent seven years in the minors before making the big leagues. He played two seasons with Los Angeles and one with Montreal before signing a minor league contract with the Padres this spring.
That will give him 10 days' rest before his next outing.
"Based on how we're going to set the second half, we're doing the right thing,'' manager Tony La Russa said. "Put that together with the way he's feeling and the exams and all the mechanical work, and I think he'll be set up real well.''
Morris underwent an MRI exam on Saturday that showed no structural problems. At that time, La Russa reiterated that Morris would pitch in the first game after the break and would have to work out his mechanical problems on the job.
Morris has allowed 38 earned runs in his last 41 innings in his last eight starts, hiking his ERA from 2.26 to 4.19. He complained of a sore shoulder in early June and since then has been out of whack mechanically.
His fastball, in particular, has suffered a drop of several mph.
The Indians' disruptive center fielder, whose career has been marked by arguments with umpires and disputes with managers, teammates and opponents, left Jacobs Field without explaining a key play in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
After hitting a two-run single in the fifth to tie it 4-4, Bradley appeared to cost the Indians the go-ahead run with some questionable baserunning.
He was at first when Shane Spencer ripped a two-out double high off the wall in left field. But instead of scoring on the play, Bradley coasted into third. He was stranded when Travis Hafner struck out.
Before Bradley went back out to the field, Indians manager Eric Wedge, who benched the combative 25-year-old this season for not hustling, talked with his player. Following the game, Wedge said he was only inquiring about Bradley's health.
"I wanted to make sure he was OK,'' the first-year manager said. "He didn't run very well right there. His knees were barking a little bit. I wanted to take him out, but he wanted to stay in.''
Ibanez fouled a pitch off the lower part of his leg in the eighth inning. He stayed in and drew a walk, but then was replaced by pinch-runner Desi Relaford.
"He'll be OK, he's just tired,'' Royals manager Tony Pena said after the 8-2 win.
Ibanez, second on the Royals with 53 RBI, was 0-for-4. He was the team's RBI leader until Carlos Beltran had two run-scoring singles Sunday night to push his total to 54.
