Giants put Rueter on DL; Jordan out for season

ESPN.com news services

San Francisco Giants: The Giants put pitcher Kirk Rueter on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday and recalled right-hander Brian Powell from Triple-A Fresno.

Rueter left Tuesday's 8-3 victory over the Cardinals in the second inning with a strained left shoulder.

Rueter, who was looking for his first victory in more than a month, was hurt after throwing a pitch to Dan Haren. Second baseman Ray Durham and shortstop Neifi Perez both rushed to the mound to check on the left-hander. Rueter walked off the field with assistant trainer Dave Groeschner.

Rueter, 0-2 in six starts since June 6, threw 30 pitches and had a 3-1 lead when he left the game. Preliminary results of an MRI showed no structural damage, but it wasn't immediately known how long he will be out. He is on anti-inflammatory medication. Rueter is 7-3 with a 4.46 ERA this season for the first-place Giants.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Outfielder Brian Jordan will have season-ending surgery on his left knee on Friday.

Jordan is batting .299 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 66 games. He's been on the 15-day disabled list since June 25.

The surgery will be performed in Vail, Colo., by Dr. Richard Steadman. The operation is similar to one Jordan had after last season.

Jordan played in 128 games last year, his lowest total in five years, and batted .285 with 18 homers and 80 RBI.

Seattle Mariners: The team placed infielder Greg Colbrunn on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of tendinitis in his right wrist.

The move is retroactive to July 3.

Colbrunn hurt his wrist during a stint on the DL from June 9-28, which was caused by a strained muscle on his right side. While on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma he dived into a base and hurt his wrist.

"It doesn't bother me too much except when I swing,'' said Colbrunn, who is hitting .276. "I dove on it. It's sore. I took a week off, came back, and it felt better. But it's just one of those things.''

An MRI and X-ray showed no damage, so Colbrunn said the plan is simply to rest the injury.

To fill the roster spot, Luis Ugueto was recalled from Double-A San Antonio.

Texas Rangers: Texas outfielder Kevin Mench was put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a broken left wrist.

The Rangers recalled outfielder Laynce Nix from Double-A Frisco. Nix was in uniform for Wednesday night's game against Minnesota.

Mench was hurt when he was hit by a pitch from Twins reliever Juan Rincon in the fifth inning of Texas' 8-6 win over Minnesota on Tuesday night. Mench remained in the game to run the bases, but was replaced in center field in the top of the sixth and had X-rays that confirmed the break.

Mench's wrist was further examined Wednesday by Dr. Bobby Wroten, and the outfielder is expected to miss four-to-six weeks.

It is the second time Mench has been on the disabled list this season. He started the season on the DL after straining a muscle in his left side during spring training.

Since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma on June 6, Mench has hit .354 (33-of-93) in 27 games to raise his average from .219 to .320. He had two doubles before getting hit Tuesday and was 19-of-50 (.380) the past 15 games.

Nix was hitting .284 with 15 homers and 63 RBI in 87 games for Frisco. He played in the Texas League All-Star game and was also scheduled, before his promotion, to play in the All-Star Futures game at Chicago on Sunday.

Oakland Athletics: A man accused of throwing a powerful firecracker that burned the leg of an 8-year-old boy at an Athletics game was questioned by police Wednesday.

Travares Moore, 21, was arrested without incident Tuesday night, Oakland Police spokeswoman Danielle Ashford said. Witnesses saw Moore throw the explosive device from the third deck to the first tier of bleachers in left field during the third inning of the game, Ashford said.

Moore was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. He faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon and explosion of a destructive device, police said. No court date had been set.

The boy and his father were taken to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in nearby Berkeley, where they were treated and released, A's spokesman Jim Young said Wednesday. The boy had first-degree burns on one of his legs and his father complained of ringing in his ears, Young said. Their names and hometown were not released.

The device, commonly known as a cherry bomb, made a loud boom as it fell into the bleachers during the A's game Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Players turned to look, causing a short delay in the game.

"This was not really a lapse in security that led to this incident,'' Young said. "It was a lapse in judgment by a patron who had more in mind than enjoying a baseball game.''

Pittsburgh Pirates: The team agreed to terms with left-hander Paul Maholm, their first-round pick in the June draft.

Maholm, the No. 8 selection overall, agreed to a $2.2 million signing bonus, according to his agent Bo McKinnis.

"We are very pleased to come to terms with Paul,'' Pirates senior vice president and general manager Dave Littlefield said. "He's had a great deal of success at the collegiate level and we're looking forward to him continuing that within the Pirates organization.''

Maholm will work out with Pittsburgh's rookie league team in Bradenton, Fla., before he is assigned to a team.

The 6-foot-3 Maholm was 9-2 at Mississippi State University this spring as a junior and had a 2.76 ERA. He was 27-10 with a 3.55 ERA in 46 games over three seasons.

Cleveland Indians: The Indians traded right-hander Aaron Myette to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday for outfielder Lyle Mouton in a swap of minor leaguers.

Myette opened the season on the disabled list and had a 23.63 ERA in two games with Cleveland. He had a 4.59 ERA in 23 appearances at Triple-A Buffalo.

Myette was 6-12 with a 7.88 ERA in 40 games with the White Sox and Texas from 1999-2002.

Mouton has spent the year in Triple-A with the New York Mets and Phillies organizations. He will report to Buffalo on Thursday.

Mouton has appeared in 328 games from 1995-2001 with the White Sox, Orioles, Brewers and Marlins and has a career .280 average with 22 home runs and 116 RBI.

The Indians on Wednesday also outrighted lefty Nick Bierbrodt to Buffalo.

Anaheim Angels: General manager Bill Stoneman was rewarded with a four-year contract extension Wednesday after building the Angels' first World Series championship team.

"I felt it was important for the team and the fans to know that management will stay in place,'' new Angels owner Arte Moreno said.

"Bill's contributions to the organization since assuming his position are self-explanatory. I believe strongly that his leadership skills and vision will continue to play a key role in our objective of being a perennial contender,'' he said.

The deal also includes an additional three years as team consultant.

Stoneman, 59, is in his fourth season with the organization. He succeeded Bill Bavasi on Nov. 1, 1999.

"I appreciate the confidence Arte has shown in our entire baseball operations department,'' Stoneman said. "We started a program here in 2000 with high expectations. I look forward to working with a tremendous group of individuals as we strive to produce an annual championship-caliber ballclub.''
