Out at least a month after getting hit by pitch

ESPN.com news services

Texas Rangers: Texas center fielder Kevin Mench will be out at least a month with a broken left wrist after being hit by a pitch in Texas' 8-6 win over Minnesota on Tuesday night.

Mench, who doubled in each of his first two at-bats, was hit while leading off the fifth against Twins reliever Juan Rincon. He immediately fell to the ground in pain. Mench, who had a cast on his wrist before the game ended, wasn't in the clubhouse after the game.

"He works his way back after getting hurt in the spring, goes down to Triple-A, comes back and plays well, and this happens," manager Buck Showalter told The Dallas Morning News.

New York Mets: Outfielder Cliff Floyd was out of the starting lineup again Tuesday night because of a sore right wrist and is expected to miss 3-to-4 days.

An examination found Floyd had an irritated tendon. He is hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 47 RBI in his first season with the Mets.

Floyd did not start Monday night in a 7-3 loss to Atlanta, and said he was eager to get back into the lineup.

"I saw the doctor today and he said it would be a few days,'' Floyd said. "If it's not better in three or four days, they'll inject it and I'll play.''

The Mets already were banged-up, with stars Mike Piazza, Mo Vaughn and Al Leiter among many players on the disabled list.

Rookie Jason Roach was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk to face the Braves on Tuesday night. He pitched in place of Leiter, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of an inflamed right knee.

Roach made his second major league appearance. In his only other outing, he started against Anaheim on June 14 and was tagged for seven runs on six hits and two walks in only three innings while taking the loss.

The right-hander was recalled with a 5-4 record and a 4.00 ERA at Norfolk.

San Diego Padres: Slugger Phil Nevin will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday and plans to rejoin the big league club on July 29 in Pittsburgh if everything goes well.

Nevin has been out since dislocating his left shoulder diving for a ball in left field on March 7 during a spring training game.

Nevin will play approximately 15 games, first for Single-A Lake Elsinore starting Monday at San Jose, then for Triple-A Portland. He'll start out as a designated hitter or pinch-hitter, then will begin playing the field.

When he returns to the Padres, it won't be as the third baseman, where he's spent most of his time since resurrecting his career in 1999.

Nevin will likely rotate into the Padres' lineup by playing in the outfield and at first base.

"It's going to work out,'' Nevin said. "I'm not making out the lineup. Everybody's agreed that I've missed enough time this year. It's important for me to play the last two months in order to be all right next year. It's not good taking this much time off and I need to play.''

San Francisco Giants: San Francisco pitcher Kirk Rueter left his start against St. Louis on Tuesday in the second inning with a strained left shoulder.

Rueter, looking for his first victory in more than a month, was hurt after throwing a pitch to St. Louis' Dan Haren. Second baseman Ray Durham and shortstop Neifi Perez both rushed to the mound to check on the left-hander. Rueter walked off the field with assistant trainer Dave Groeschner. He underwent an MRI.

Rueter had thrown 30 pitches and had a 3-1 lead. He was replaced by Jim Brower, who was being considered for a spot start Thursday so that Jason Schmidt could take an extra day of rest and start Friday instead.

Toronto Blue Jays: The team acquired minor league pitcher John Wasdin from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday for minor league outfielder Rich Thompson.

Wasdin, who's been with Triple-A Nashville this season, leads the Pacific Coast League with 116 strikeouts and is tied for fifth in the league with eight victories. He threw a perfect game in April against Albuquerque.

Wasdin has pitched for several major league teams, including Boston, Oakland, Colorado, Baltimore and Philadelphia. In 2002 he played for the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Central League.

It was not clear if Wasdin would report to Toronto or its Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.

Thompson, 24, has split the season between Toronto's top two affiliates, Double-A New Haven and Syracuse. He is hitting .306 with no home runs and 16 RBI in 87 games between the clubs. Thompson has 26 stolen bases.

Thompson hit .280 in 135 games for Double-A Tennessee in 2002, scoring a Southern League record 109 runs with 45 stolen bases.

Minnesota Twins: The Twins purchased the contract of right-hander James Baldwin from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.

The Twins announced the move after their 8-6 loss at Texas.

Minnesota designated catcher Tom Prince for assignment. The Twins have 10 days to trade or release Prince, who already has cleared waivers.

Prince was hitting .200 in 24 games with two homers and five RBI.
