Trammell might have played last game with Yanks

ESPN.com news services

New York Yankees: Yankees manager Joe Torre said Tuesday that missing outfielder Bubba Trammell may have played his last game in pinstripes.

"That would be my guess,'' Torre said. "But who knows?''

Trammell was placed on the restricted list Monday, one day after he unexpectedly left the club for unspecified personal reasons.

"I wish I could tell you something, but I know nothing more than I did the first day,'' Torre said before Tuesday's game against Baltimore. "My concern is for his health and for his family's health.''

Trammell was supposed to start in left field against the Mets on Sunday night. But before the game, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman received a call from Trammell's agent, Ed Hardison, saying the player would not be at Yankee Stadium.

Torre still has not spoken with Trammell, but said general manager Brian Cashman spoke with Hardison on Tuesday.

Asked if he thought he would ever manage Trammell as a Yankee again, Torre said: "Probably in the immediate future, yes, it would be a surprise if I did.''

Former Yankee Miller dies: Bill Miller, a former major league pitcher, died of congestive heart failure Tuesday. He was 75.

Miller appeared in 41 games between 1952 and 1955. He was 6-9 with five complete games and two shutouts in his career, which he closed out with Baltimore.

He was a member of the Yankees' teams that won the World Series in 1952 and 1953, though he did not pitch in the postseason.

Cincinnati Reds: Reds outfielder Austin Kearns apparently did not seriously injure his right shoulder in a home-plate collision with Atlanta's Ray King on May 21.

MRIs performed Tuesday were negative, according to the Reds.

Kearns' statistics have dropped off significantly since the collision. Kearns hit .309 with 13 homers and 44 RBI in 45 games before the injury, but has a .219 average with two homers and 13 RBI in 31 games since.

Also Tuesday, Reds left-hander Jimmy Anderson refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville and elected to become a free agent. Anderson was designated for assignment Friday, when right-hander John Riedling was reinstated from the disabled list.

Anderson was 1-5 with an 8.84 ERA in seven starts and one relief appearance during two stints with the Reds this season.

Hearings postponed for Casey, Guillen: Disciplinary hearings for Sean Casey and Jose Guillen of the Reds and Jason Kendall of the Pittsburgh Pirates, scheduled for Tuesday, were postponed at major league baseball's request.

New dates have not been scheduled.

Casey was suspended three games for charging Carlos Silva of Philadelphia on June 13. Guillen was suspended for two games for bumping plate umpire Matt Hollowell while arguing a called third strike last week in St. Louis.

Cincinnati pitcher Paul Wilson on Tuesday served the fifth and final game of his suspension for fighting with Kyle Farnsworth of the Chicago Cubs on June 19.

Kendall was suspended three games after fighting with Tampa Bay's Marlon Anderson on June 14. Kendall was told the suspension would be cut to two games if he dropped his appeal, but he contends he should not be suspended.

Seattle Mariners: Seattle first baseman John Olerud was held out of the lineup Tuesday against Oakland because of a strained right hamstring.

Olerud was hurt rounding second base in the seventh inning of the Mariners' 3-1 victory on Monday, and Greg Colbrunn pinch hit for him in the ninth.

Olerud received treatment Tuesday and could play as soon as Wednesday, though manager Bob Melvin hopes he can give Olerud another day to recover.

"I don't like being hurt, but I don't think it's very serious,'' Olerud said. "Any time with a hamstring you worry about reinjuring it.''

Trainer Rick Griffin said he doesn't believe Olerud will be out more than a couple of days.

"It's very mild,'' Griffin said. "It's not serious.''

San Francisco Giants: Outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds, released last month by the Milwaukee Brewers, signed a minor league contract Tuesday with the Giants.

Hammonds batted .158 with one home run and three RBI with the Brewers before going on the 15-day disabled list with a high ankle sprain. He was released June 4.

Hammonds will work his way into playing shape in the Arizona League and then will go to Triple-A Fresno.

In 868 career games, Hammonds has a .274 average with 104 home runs and 406 RBI.

Hammonds is in the final season of a three-year, $21.75 million deal he signed with Milwaukee before the 2001 season, the richest in franchise history.

The Giants will only owe Hammonds a prorated portion of the $300,000 minimum salary if he makes the major league roster. The Brewers are responsible for the remainder of the $8.2 million Hammonds is owed this year.

Toronto Blue Jays: The Blue Jays placed utilityman Dave Berg on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of fatigue.

Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said Berg, batting .277 with three home runs and 13 RBI, is sometimes exhausted after taking only 10 ground balls.

Tosca said every test performed on Berg has come up negative. He will undergo more tests.

The Blue Jays recalled third baseman Howie Clark from their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.
