The Cardinals called the move "precautionary'' because of tenderness in Morris' right shoulder.
The team will call up right-hander Dan Haren from Triple-A Memphis to make his major league debut, while Morris' next start was pushed back to Saturday against the Chicago Cubs.
Morris is 8-5 with a 3.85 ERA in 17 appearances, all starts. Cardinals recall Robinson: The St. Louis Cardinals recalled outfielder Kerry Robinson from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday, two days after sending him down. In 47 games this season with St. Louis, Robinson hit .192 with six runs and three RBI.
Also Sunday, the Cardinals placed reliever Kiko Calero on the 15-day disabled list. Calero is scheduled to undergo surgery Monday after rupturing a tendon in his right knee in Saturday night's 13-9 win over the Kansas City Royals.
Trammell was supposed to start in left field against the Mets. But before the game, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman received a call from Trammell's agent, Ed Hardison, saying the player would not be at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees said they planned to make an application to the commissioner's office Monday to put Trammell on the restricted list. He would be ineligible to play while on it.
"He's not here and I don't know any more than that,'' Cashman said.
Cashman said Trammell's situation was not related to a death, but did not provide any other details.
The Blue Jays also announced that right-hander Juan Acevedo has been temporarily removed from the 25-man roster for bereavement leave to attend the funeral of his grandmother in Chicago. Acevedo could return in three to seven days. Politte had a 6.42 ERA and 11 saves.
The Blue Jays have recalled right-hander Mike Smith and left-hander Jason Kershner from Triple-A Syracuse to replace them on the roster.
Griffiths took the loss Saturday in the opener of a day-night, two-park doubleheader. He gave up five runs and seven hits, including a grand slam by Hideki Matsui, in three innings of his first major league start.
The 25-year-old right-hander was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in four games. Last weekend, he pitched as a last-minute replacement for Tom Glavine and got off to a shaky start against the Yankees, but the game was rained out before it became official.
Griffiths was optioned and Cerda was promoted from Norfolk before Sunday night's game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Cerda was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 13 games for the Mets. He was 1-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 15 games for Norfolk.
Lee will start the first game of a doubleheader Monday in Kansas City.
"I'm just here for one game and then I'll be sent back, no matter what I do,'' Lee said. "I can't put any extra pressure on myself by saying I have to do great no matter what. I look at it as just another start -- and I want to do well any time I take the mound.''
Lee spent the first two months of this season on the disabled list with a lower abdominal strain, which happened during the Indians' offseason program before spring training. The 24 year-old, one of three players acquired from Montreal last season in the trade that sent right-hander Bartolo Colon to the Expos, spent most of April and May in extended spring training before making a rehab start at Class-A Kinston on May 29.
In five June starts at Double-A Akron and Buffalo, Lee went a combined 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA.
The Orioles said Roberts has a ligament sprain in his right elbow. But only 90 minutes before the move was announced, Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove spoke as though he knew nothing of Roberts' injury.
"I've been trying to get him back on track. Willis has a good arm, he's got good stuff,'' Hargrove said. "When he commands his stuff he gets people out. So far this year, he hasn't been very consistent with his command, especially his fastball.''
Roberts also gave no indication that his arm was giving him problems.
"I only made two bad pitches yesterday,'' he said. "I'm fine.''
Roberts allowed two runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings against Philadelphia on Saturday night and has yielded at least one run in eight of his last 16 appearances. He is 3-1 with a lofty 5.72 ERA over 26 games.
Choi is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday. He's been on the disabled list with a concussion since June 8. He was injured when he collided with Kerry Wood chasing a pop up. Wellemeyer was 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA in 10 appearances with the Cubs. |
