Kapler was in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Florida Marlins, batting seventh and playing right field. He went 3-for-6 in two minor league games after being signed Thursday. He was released by the Colorado Rockies on June 19. Kapler is a career .270 hitter with 51 homers, 101 doubles, 225 RBI and 57 stolen bases in parts of six major league seasons with Detroit, Texas and Colorado. He hit .224 with 10 runs, two doubles, four RBI and two stolen bases in 39 games with the Rockies this season.
The Astros also transferred right-hander Brian Moehler to the 60-day disabled list. Moehler was placed on the team's 15-day disabled list April 25 with an elbow injury. Gallo was 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 16 games at New Orleans this season. He's also made 17 appearances at Double-A Round Rock this season. Bland was 1-2 with a 5.75 ERA in 22 games with the Astros this season.
Snyder, a third baseman from Stetson who hit .396 with 11 homers and 55 RBI this season, was the 26th overall pick in the draft. Oakland had the pick as compensation for losing free agent Ray Durham, who signed with the San Francisco Giants. The A's also signed Arizona State outfielder Andre Ethier, a second-round pick; Texas outfielder Dustin Majewski, a third-round pick; Oral Roberts catcher David Castillo; and left-hander Steven Bondurant. In addition, Oakland signed two Florida State teammates: left-handers Trent Peterson and Matthew Lynch.
While with Triple-A Tacoma last week, Colbrunn also sprained his right wrist, but that injury has also healed.
Colbrunn is hitting .277 in 18 games for the Mariners, who usually use him as a backup to first baseman John Olerud. Manager Bob Melvin had planned to use Colbrunn more often but found it difficult to take Olerud out.
"Even when John's having a tough time swinging the bat, he's still a Gold Glove,'' Melvin said.
The 34-year-old Colbrunn hasn't played for Seattle since leaving in the eighth inning of the second game of a doubleheader June 8 against the New York Mets. Before that, he was hitting .355 since May 1.
He went on the DL on June 15, retroactive to June 9.
To make room on the 25-man roster, the Mariners optioned infielder Luis Ugueto to Double-A San Antonio.
Phillips was leading the Triple-A International League in wins, going 10-1 with a 2.12 ERA for the Buffalo Bisons. In 85 innings, he allowed 68 hits, walked 19 and struck out 56. Phillips, 29, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 14th round of the 1992 draft. He made six relief appearances for Pittsburgh in 1999 and signed a minor league contract with Cleveland in June 2001 after he was released. Last year, Phillips was 1-3 with a 4.97 ERA in eight appearances -- six starts -- with Cleveland. Information from The Associated Press and SportsTicker was used in this report. |
