The Blitz: Recruiting Scoop
ESPN The Magazine

The upheaval at Georgia is sending shockwaves throughout the recruiting world. The nation's top CB, Ahmad Carroll, now seems all set to be a Seminole. "Batman" says he was shocked by the news that Bulldog coach Jim Donnan was fired Monday. The Dawgs' loss appears to be another gain for FSU. Carroll was Georgia's 100-meter champ as a sophomore, and has grown into a physical cover corner. He had a great visit in Tallahassee, so expect him to join buddy Yohance Buchanan in the FSU secondary. Georgia Tech still has an outside shot, though, thanks to the work of ace recruiter David Kelly.

Also having second thoughts is blue-chip DL Marquise Hill of Baton Rouge. An agile, 6-8, 300-pounder with a great work ethic, Hill was supposed to visit Athens this weekend, but now he tells ESPN The Magazine he will check out Auburn instead. Hill says he enjoyed his visit to Michigan last weekend and likes the Wolverines along with LSU, Miami and Georgia Tech.

The success of Oklahoma appears to be having quite a carryover effect -- all the way to Lubbock, Texas. Former Sooner OC Mike Leach, the architect of OU's offense, has been dazzling recruits in the southwest. Last weekend, the Red Raiders got five commitments: four from Mississippi JCs and one from Ryan Gilbert, a dynamic athlete from Hillcrest, Texas. The 5-11, 185-pound Gilbert played QB in high school but is expected to be a receiver in Tech's spread passing system. Some coaches in Texas are touting him as a poor man's Peter Warrick. Gilbert picked the Red Raiders over Miami, Oklahoma and Tennessee. He should team with burner Armon Dorrough, another prep commit from Texas, and JC superstar Anton Paige (6-5, 205).

New Rutgers coach Greg Schiano and DC Mike Miello have their work cut out for them. Only two of the top 40 players (CB Lionel Bolen and TE Chris Loomis) in New Jersey reportedly had the Scarlet Knights in their top five before the former Miami DC took over. But don't be surprised if the new staff makes a big impact fast. Schiano was known as a terrific recruiter while at Miami, and Miello (Schiano's former high school coach at Ramapo High in Frankin Lakes, NJ) is one of the most respected football men in the state.
