The Blitz: Recruiting Scoop
ESPN The Magazine

Think the Alabama coaching situation is a mess? Well, with word of the NCAA going down to Tuscaloosa to interview Tide players and coaches, the program's future has grown even dicier. Not only are possible coaching candidates waiting to see what shakes out, so are prospective recruits.

Uberprospect Brodie Croyle, the record-setting QB from Rainbow City, Ala., told ESPNMAG.com Tuesday he's leaning towards Florida State. "I want to see who Alabama hires as its head coach," the 6-3, 205-pound quarterback said, "and what happens with the NCAA -- because I definitely don't want to go there if they're gonna be on probation."

Croyle, who had Seminoles coaches Bobby Bowden and Mark Richt over for dinner Tuesday night, will visit LSU this weekend and make his decision Dec. 14 so he can enroll in January. He has also visited Miami, 'Bama and Oklahoma. Croyle also says he thinks top RB Carnell Williams, another Alabama kid, will go with him wherever he signs. "And a few top receivers told me they are gonna go with us too," he says.

Croyle's decision isn't the only news programs are hanging on. On Dec. 15, junior college players can make their commitments. Among the ones most likely to make an impact in 2001 are QB Marc Dunn from Ricks College in Utah, DT Paul Broussard from Blinn (TX) College and DE Andrew Williams from Hinds (MS) College.

Dunn rocketed onto the radar this season, completing 61 percent of his passes for 39 TDs and just 14 INTs. Not bad for a guy who didn't have a single offer coming out of high school. The 6-4, 205-pound Dunn, who played in a veer offense in high school and runs a 4.6, is leaning to K-State but it also considering BYU and Tennessee. "He's got a gun," says Ricks coach Ed Larson. "He throws it 75 (yards) easily. All he needed to learn was how to be a pocket passer."

Broussard might be NFL-ready now. At 6-3, 310, he runs a 4.8 and was virtually unblockable this fall. He's looking at Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Incidentally, teammate Alfio Randall, an agile 6-7, 310-pound OT, is headed to Texas, where he should replace all-American Leonard Davis.

The 6-4, 260-pound Williams -- a legit 4.6 guy -- is expected to re-join former Hinds teammate Jerome McDougle at Miami. Hinds coaches say Williams (20 sacks in 2000) is every bit as good as Stockar's highly-touted brother. He's actually better against the run, but might not be quite the pass rusher coming off the edge. The pair combined for 23 sacks in 1999, and Williams predicts the bookends will be tearing people up again in 2001. But FSU is still vying for the JC standout.
