Nashville Predators: The Nashville Predators traded defenseman Andy Delmore to Buffalo on Friday for a third-round draft pick next year. Delmore scored 18 goals and had 16 assists in 71 games last season. His 14 power-play goals led all NHL defensemen. "Andy is an offensive defenseman who has been one of the most productive blue-liners in the NHL the past couple of seasons," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. Predators GM David Poile said: "We have made the decision that our defense is an area we need to rebuild." Pittsburgh Penguins: Eddie Olczyk tabbed one of his old coaches to fill out his own staff. The Pens named former Chicago Blackhawks coach Lorne Molleken an assistant Friday. Molleken, who has 10 years of head coaching experience at the NHL, AHL and major junior levels, joins Randy Hillier and Joe Mullen on coach Olczyk's staff. Olczyk played under Molleken when the 47-year-old worked with the Blackhawks from 1998-2000. Molleken served as both assistant coach and coach for the Blackhawks, posting an 18-21-8 mark in parts of two seasons at the helm. Molleken also has been an assistant with the San Jose Sharks. "Lorne's vast experience in coaching at all levels makes him a perfect fit for me and our team," said Olczyk, who was named coach earlier this month after spending three seasons as a broadcaster for Pittsburgh. "He's a rock-solid guy, he has a tremendous ability to work and communicate with young people and his experience as a goaltender brings a unique dimension to our staff. Lorne coached me in Chicago and was one of the best coaches I ever had." It's good for the rebuilding Penguins that Molleken has proven himself as an exceptional developmental coach during a four-year stint with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League from 1991-95. He compiled a 170-101-17 record, reached the Memorial Cup finals in 1992 and 1994 and was named WHL Coach of the Year in 1994. Molleken spent three seasons as coach of the Edmonton Oilers' affiliates in Cape Breton and Hamilton. He guided Hamilton to the AHL Calder Cup finals in 1997. The former minor league goaltender most recently was general manager of the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors. |
