San Jose expects much of Ehrhoff this season

Associated Press

San Jose Sharks : The team signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff and goalie Dimitri Patzold on Sunday.

Ehrhoff, a fourth-round draft pick in 2001, is expected to contend for a roster spot this fall as the latest in a string of outstanding German prospects for San Jose. The 20-year-old scored 27 points for Krefeld of the German Elite League last season, and he played for Germany at the World Championships.

Patzold, also a fourth-round pick in 2001, is a native of Kazakhstan, the home of Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov. He was a backup in the top German league last season.

  • On Saturday, forward Alex Korolyuk, a Shark from 1997 to 2002, signed a two-year contract after spending last season in his native Russia.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks: Jean-Sebastien Giguere might not have the Stanley Cup but he has another valuable piece of hardware -- a gold wedding ring.

The goaltender was married Saturday to Kristen Fawthrop before about 230 guests at Trinity Anglican Church in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. The service was in French and English.

Giguere, the MVP of the Stanley Cup finals, earlier signed autographs and spoke to fans lining the block that had been closed to traffic as four uniformed Mounties watched the crowd.

"It was awesome," Megan Himmelman, 10, told the Halifax Chronicle-Herald.

Guests tossed white rose petals and blew bubbles as the newlyweds' car sped away after the ceremony. The reception was at an oceanfront resort, where Fawthrop's father is the innkeeper.

The couple planned a Caribbean cruise before heading to their home in Montreal.
