Leafs fire 36 shots at porous Boston

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

TORONTO (AP) -- For one night at least, the Toronto Maple Leafs looked like the high-scoring team of a year ago.

Sergei Berezin, Garry Valk and Yanic Perreault each had two points in the Toronto's four-goal second period as the Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 7-1 Sunday night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs celebrated after Danny Markov tallied one of the team's seven goals Sunday.

The Maple Leafs, who have struggled to score goals, had seven goal scorers. Gary Roberts, Berezin, Danny Markov, Tie Domi, Perreault, Jonus Hoglund and Valk scored for Toronto.

"I believe in these guys," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said. "We've had six and seven 20 goal scorers over the last couple of years, so it's there."

The Maple Leafs finished with a season-high 36 shots after managing just 16 in their scoreless tie with St. Louis on Saturday night.

The Bruins, 8-3 losers to Atlanta on Saturday night, have given up 15 goals in their last two games.

"It's embarrassing," Boston's Don Sweeney said.

Kay Whitmore replaced Boston goalie Andrew Raycroft to start the third. Raycroft gave up five goals on 26 shots. Whitmore gave up two goals on 10 shots.

The Bruins are 1-5 in their last six games, and 2-9 in their last 11.

"We expect our hockey club to play with a lot more discipline, commitment and determination," Boston coach Mike Keenan said. "They need to play harder for each other, which we haven't seen yet."

Frustrations boiled over in the third period. Joe Hulbig and Dave Manson had just finished serving matching roughing minors when Domi pummeled Hulbig with a mid-ice check away from the play that drew a charging penalty. During Domi's penalty, Ken Belanger tried to draw Roberts into a fight off a faceoff that developed into a brawl.

"It was a blatant attempt to injure," Keenan said. "Tie is tough enough. He doesn't have to do that to somebody. He can fight his own battles, and he can fight them properly. He doesn't have to try to maim him, which he tried to do."

Keenan said he would talk to the NHL about it.

"Tell him to worry more about calling the NHL. (He should) worry about his personality," Domi said. "I don't have anything against Keenan, but that's typical."

Markov gave Toronto a 2-1 lead at 7:28 of second with a shot from the point.

Berezin was alone at the side of the net when Valk and Perreault assisted on his power play goal at 14:37.

Domi one-timed a pass from Jonus Hoglund to make it 4-1 at 16:49 of the second.

Perreault tapped in a rebound at 18:24 to make it 5-1. Valk and Berezin assisted on the goal.

Roberts scored on a wraparound at 6:33 of the first after defenseman Jason Allison fell to the ice and gave up the puck.

Mikko Eloranta scored Boston's lone goal at 10:56 of the first period.

Toronto goalie Curtis Joseph stopped 21 shots.

Game notes
Paul Coffey missed the game with a concussion. ... Roberts has six goals in the last nine games. ... Domi has two goals this season. ... The Bruins are 2-4-0-1 since Keenan was hired as coach on Oct. 25. ... Valk had a goal and two assists.
